When it comes to opening sequences, I dislike when there too many stills, or when the characters are just standing still with their hair blowing in the wind. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as it can be very aesthetically pleasing, just boring (CLANNAD, I'm looking at you). I love openings that are creative, artistic, and a lot of movement.
(I'm only posting the embed links to my top three. I'll provide Youtube links to the rest of them. The list is in order or preference.)
1. Cowboy Bebop - Tank! - You could probably guess from the picture that my favorite opening sequence is Cowboy Bebop. First off, I love the use of silhouettes. In anything, not just this. The animation coordinates so well with the music, which was composed by the divine Yoko Kanno. There was lots of action, guns, and the Swordfish II, and it really gave a sense of the show's atmosphere. For some reason, I love it when they show Ed's hands. I'm not sure why, but that's one of my favorite parts.
2. Revolutionary Girl Utena - Rondo Revolution - I watched Utena for the first time this year. I watched the whole series, and the movie in less than two days. The opening really caught my attention, as well as the song. I love the surreal imagery, such as then the Dueling Arena is collapsing. They also managed to give all of the main characters their own shots, which were fast paced, aesthetically pleasing, and weren't stills. But my absolute favorite part of the opening is when Utena and Anthy are in knight's armor on horses, galloping through the upside down castle.
3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - again - I love how it starts out soft, with the shot of the alchemic circle and young Hoenheim, and transitions to Trisha and the little Elrics. Then the guitar kicks in, the brothers burn their house down and the title logo shows up. This opening was fast paced, managed to feature pretty much the entire main and supporting cast from the first few arcs, and had lots of action, such as the fight between Ed and the three main beginning homunculi. Favorite part? When Hawkeye and Winry are mouthing the lyrics.
4. Cardcaptor Sakura - Catch You, Catch Me - It was the first opening I ever saw. I was so surprised, as I had never seen anything so adorable and charming in an animated show's opening before. This sequence is still a classic, captures the spirit and innocence of Cardcaptor Sakura, and will always be one of my personal favorites.
5. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu - Bouken Desho Desho? - I love the use of the different colored squares/rectangles in the beginning shots, and near the end as well. The main characters were all featured when Haruhi was running through some crazy path with a dizzying amount of hearts and stars, which really charms me for some reason. I also enjoyed the noticeable lack of stills.
6. Cardcaptor Sakura - Purachina - Catch You Catch Me was the most fun of CCS' three openings, but Purachina had the most serious air to it, which I loved. Sakura looked like an angel who was searching for something, which she pretty much was during the last season. And of course, they managed to feature Tomoyo, Syaoran, Yukito and Yue, Kero, Eriol and Touya in a bunch of rapid shots, which worked well with the music.
7. Neon Genesis Evangelion- Cruel Angel's Thesis - An anime classic. As I mentioned before, I love silhouettes, and the beginning had a few. Also the use of alchemy symbols, which I recognized from FMA, which I didn't fully appreciate or understand until now. Then of course character shots, and Shinji fighting in the Eva Unit 01. But the beginning, more symbolic part of the opening is what puts this sequence in the top for me.
8. Soul Eater - Resonance - Fight scenes, lots of different camera angles, and it really gave a sense of what Soul Eater is like. Action packed, with a creepy, sinister side, with a hint of fanservice. Also, Shinigami rockin' out to the song in the beginning. While I was disappointed on how the anime ended, this opening is still the best one.
9. Maria Holic - HANAJI - It's SHAFT. Which means that there's always some unique or crazy imagery, that's often a little trippy. This one is just that. This really is the strangest opening I've ever seen in my life. But it's hilarious, and there's a maid guitar. You can't not laugh at that. The bizarre animation is also accompanied by Kobayashi Yu, who sings in a voice that I've never heard her use before, as she typically cast as younger male roles. If you want to see something really peculiar, then check out this opening if you haven't seen it already.
10. Yuyu Hakusho - Smile Bomb - This anime is very near to my heart. This opening captured my attention right away. The song is catchy, the nostalgic times of old shounen style mixed with cel animation, and some demon butt kicking. Also, another sequence with hardly any stills. I freaking love this show.
